South Korea's President Warns North Korea Could Produce Up to 20 Nuclear Weapons Annually

North Korea is on track to significantly expand its nuclear arsenal, potentially producing an estimated 10 to 20 nuclear weapons annually, according to South Korea’s newly elected president. In a recent address at the Center for Strategic and International Studies, President Lee Jae Myung highlighted the concerning advancements in North Korea’s nuclear capabilities, stating that the regime has already assembled approximately 50 nuclear warheads and possesses enough fissile material to manufacture up to 40 additional warheads.

President Lee emphasized that North Korea’s intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) development is nearing completion, with capabilities that could target the United States. He expressed concerns about the persistent growth of North Korea’s nuclear program despite the harsh sanctions and deterrent measures previously employed by his administration’s predecessors.

“The hard fact is that the number of nuclear weapons that North Korea possesses has increased over the past three to four years,” Lee stated, acknowledging the limitations of the past hard-line approach that largely shunned diplomatic engagement. He advocated for a shift in strategy, emphasizing the importance of reducing tensions through dialogue and a reevaluation of South Korea’s military posture.

While reaffirming South Korea’s commitment to conventional military deterrence against any North Korean aggression, President Lee also indicated a willingness to adopt less provocative measures. He referenced the cessation of loudspeaker broadcasts aimed at North Korea, aimed at reducing hostilities across the heavily fortified military border.

The timing of Lee’s remarks coincided with his discussions with President Donald Trump, who expressed a desire for renewed talks with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un. The evolving geo-political landscape and North Korea’s expanding capabilities have raised alarms in the region, prompting calls for a reassessment of diplomatic strategies to address the ongoing tensions on the Korean Peninsula.
