Sweden’s defense procurement agency has finalized a major agreement with Saab for the supply of four Gripen fighter jets to Thailand, marking a significant enhancement of the Southeast Asian nation’s military capabilities. This $500 million deal, which is valued at 5.3 billion Swedish kronor, comprises three Gripen E models and one Gripen F aircraft, along with essential equipment, ongoing support, and comprehensive training services.
Deliveries of these advanced aircraft are set to take place between 2025 and 2030, ensuring that the Royal Thai Armed Forces have access to state-of-the-art technology in the upcoming years. Micael Johansson, President and CEO of Saab, expressed enthusiasm about Thailand joining the Gripen family. “We welcome Thailand as the latest customer for Gripen E/F,” he stated, emphasizing Thailand’s established relationship with the Gripen system and its recognition of the fighter’s capabilities.
The deal also includes a long-term offset package, which is expected to greatly benefit Thailand. This package is anticipated to facilitate significant defense technology transfer, foster industrial cooperation, and stimulate new investments across various sectors of the national economy—an endeavor aimed at boosting local industry and enhancing Thailand’s self-reliance in defense capabilities.
Thailand’s decision to procure the Gripen aircraft over the F-16 followed a thorough 10-month review process conducted by its procurement committee, which concluded in August 2024. This choice is significant, particularly in light of recent border tensions with Cambodia that resulted in substantial loss of life. The approval of the deal aligns with a broader strategy to modernize the Royal Thai Air Force’s combat capabilities, a move seen as crucial for national defense.
Currently, the Royal Thai Air Force operates a squadron of 11 Gripen C/D multi-role fighters in addition to its fleet of F-16s, which were acquired back in the 1980s. The integration of these next-generation fighters is expected to further enhance the operational readiness and strategic autonomy of Thailand’s aerial defense forces.
