RCH 155 Howitzers for Ukraine Upgraded Based on Armed Forces Feedback

The RCH 155 self-propelled howitzers destined for Ukraine are undergoing enhancements based on feedback from the Ukrainian Armed Forces, as indicated by Ralf Ketzel, CEO of KNDS Germany, during a recent interview with DW.

Kyiv became the inaugural foreign operator of this advanced artillery system after acquiring its first batch of 54 RCH 155 units from Germany in January. Following receipt, the artillery systems underwent extensive testing and evaluation by Ukrainian troops, revealing several technical challenges. These included the need for integration with Ukraine’s combat management systems and command and control systems to facilitate coordinated military operations. Ketzel pointed out that discussions on integration had not taken place previously as both parties were concentrating on other pressing issues.

Currently, KNDS is working closely with Ukrainian forces to refine the artillery system, ensuring it is operationally ready for front-line deployment once delivered. Ketzel expressed optimism about potential deliveries within the year, contingent on resolving existing concerns. However, he noted that the Ukrainian military would have the authority to make any official announcements regarding delivery timelines.

In addition, Ketzel shared that the company is in development of a vehicle designed to intercept drones while on the move, boasting similar mobility to that of the RCH 155.

The RCH 155 has been described as an “engineering masterpiece” by German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius. Built on an eight-wheeled Boxer armored chassis, this self-propelled howitzer requires only a two-person crew and has the capability to fire while in motion. It is equipped with a fully automated, remotely controlled turret that houses a 155mm/L52 main gun system, capable of delivering up to 8 rounds per minute.

The effective firing range of the RCH 155 varies depending on the type of ammunition used. Base-bleed and V-LAP shells can achieve distances of 40 to 54 kilometers (25 to 33 miles), while advanced smart munitions, such as the Vulcano and Excalibur, can extend ranges even further.

In terms of specifications, the howitzer measures 10.5 meters (34.45 feet) in length, 2.99 meters (9.81 feet) in width, and stands 3.61 meters (11.85 feet) tall. It has a total weight of 40 tons and is powered by an MTU diesel engine that produces up to 600 kilowatts (815 horsepower). The RCH 155 can reach speeds of 100 kilometers per hour (62 miles per hour) and has an operational range of 700 kilometers (435 miles).

Beyond Ukraine, Switzerland has also chosen the RCH 155 to succeed its aging fleet of M109 self-propelled howitzers, with a decision finalized in November 2024.
