Red Cat Holdings Launches Blue Ops Division for Modular Unmanned Surface Vessels

Puerto Rico-based defense firm Red Cat Holdings has officially unveiled its new division, Blue Ops, which is set to develop cutting-edge, modular unmanned surface vessel weapon systems aimed at enhancing defense and security operations. This initiative builds on Red Cat’s previous commitment to expand into maritime autonomy, seeking to introduce a sophisticated line of combat-tested surface drones.

The launch of Blue Ops aligns with Red Cat’s strategic aspirations to bolster manufacturing capabilities in the United States. The division will focus on integrating advanced sensors, strike capabilities, and aerial drones into its platforms, enhancing their functionality for intelligence, surveillance, reconnaissance, and tactical missions. This effort is further underpinned by Red Cat’s support for White House executive orders aimed at strengthening American maritime capabilities, in accordance with the US Navy’s Navigation Plan, which emphasizes the scaling of autonomous systems and enhancing fleet readiness by 2027.

Blue Ops will complement Red Cat’s existing divisions, including Teal Drones and FlightWave Aerospace, as the company adopts a strategy to create a cohesive “family of systems” and position itself as a comprehensive all-domain defense provider.

Leading the new division is Barry Hinckley, who brings extensive maritime experience as a US Coast Guard-certified Merchant Mariner and a seasoned entrepreneur in the industry. His background spans decades across various roles, including sailing and aviation, as well as in enterprise software. Joining him is Alexander Spaulding, a former president at Hinckley Yachts, who has held several prominent positions in the maritime sector. Hinckley Yachts, a reputable luxury yacht manufacturer, historically produced over 500 vessels for the U.S. Army and Navy during World War II under the Hinckley family.

Hinckley expressed optimism regarding the new initiative, highlighting its significance as a vital extension of Red Cat’s all-domain strategy, intended to support contemporary warfighters across air, land, and sea. He emphasized that the aim is not to replace large naval vessels but rather to create smaller, smarter, uncrewed platforms that can enhance operational reach, provide protective measures, and access regions beyond the capabilities of traditional ships. Hinckley articulated a clear vision for the future of maritime defense, underscoring the necessity of rapid, modular weapons systems built within the United States, which Blue Ops is dedicated to delivering.
