The Pentagon’s Defense Innovation Unit (DIU) has recognized Ascent AeroSystems’ Spirit coaxial uncrewed aerial vehicle (UAV) with a distinctive double acknowledgment within its Blue UAS program. This recognition positions the Spirit as the only airframe on the Blue UAS Cleared List, indicating it is a fully evaluated, government-approved complete system, as well as on the Blue UAS Framework, which classifies it as a vetted component for integration into other platforms.
This unique status allows Department of Defense (DoD) agencies to deploy Spirit either as a standalone UAV or as part of a larger system architecture, effectively streamlining the approval process. Peter Fuchs, Co-founder and CEO of Ascent, emphasized the significance of this dual recognition in showcasing the Spirit as a reliable drone that meets the DoD’s demand for modular, open systems.
The Spirit UAV is designed as a compact and rugged platform, measuring 12 inches tall and 4.2 inches wide, with a maximum takeoff weight of 13.5 pounds. It is capable of carrying payloads of up to 6.5 pounds. The drone’s flight endurance is notable: it can operate for up to 38 minutes without payload or 16 minutes at maximum capacity with a single battery; with dual batteries, these durations extend to 53 minutes and 32 minutes, respectively.
The UAV is also capable of flying at a maximum altitude of 14,600 feet and achieving speeds exceeding 60 miles per hour, while maintaining a recommended autonomous speed of 40 miles per hour. Constructed for rugged conditions, the Spirit boasts an IP56 rating, allowing it to operate in extreme temperatures ranging from -40 to 130 degrees Fahrenheit and withstand winds exceeding 40 miles per hour.
Navigation capabilities are enhanced through GPS, GLONASS, and Beidou systems, with RTK support for added precision. Fuchs indicated the potential for the Spirit’s recognition to significantly influence the Blue UAS program, stating that as Congress moves forward with the national strategy for Drone Dominance, the demand for innovative, compliant, and scalable platforms has never been more crucial.
