A significant drone strike near Aleppo International Airport on Thursday resulted in the death of two individuals, according to a Syrian security official. The state media confirmed the strike but did not disclose the identity of those responsible. Eyewitness reports from an AFP correspondent indicated the presence of a vaporized vehicle close to the airport, with debris scattered in the surrounding area.
The official news agency SANA reported that the drone specifically targeted a civilian car traveling on the road leading to the airport. The health ministry cited at least one fatality from the strike, while Ali al-Youssef, an official from the Ministry of Interior’s security forces, later confirmed that both occupants of the vehicle were killed.
Details regarding the perpetrator of the attack remain unclear. It is noteworthy that both Israel and a U.S.-led coalition have historically conducted drone strikes in Syria. These operations have primarily aimed at combating militant groups, particularly focusing on members of the Islamic State (IS) in the region. However, there has been no immediate response from either entity concerning this latest incident.
In previous actions, the coalition has targeted northern Syria, with reports in August highlighting the elimination of a senior IS leader in Atme, northwest of Aleppo. The ongoing tension and military actions in Syria raise concerns about the continued instability in the area, impacting both military and civilian populations.
