Team LionStrike Formed to Compete for British Army's Light Mobility Vehicle Program

GM Defense, BAE Systems, and NP Aerospace have announced their collaboration under the name “Team LionStrike” to bid for the British Army’s Light Mobility Vehicle (LMV) program. This initiative aims to modernize the Army’s aging fleet of light military vehicles, creating a standardized platform suitable for various military operations.

The British government plans to procure several thousand LMVs over the next decade to support its infantry, cavalry, and artillery units. The current initiative is seen as a crucial step in phasing out the older Land Rover and Pinzgauer vehicles, which are set to retire before the decade’s end.

In this partnership, GM Defense will provide its Infantry Squad Vehicle (ISV) and various configurations tailored for military use. BAE Systems will take charge of modifying these systems through its Weapon Systems UK subsidiary. Meanwhile, NP Aerospace will function as the UK-based Design Authority, ensuring that the vehicles meet necessary operational requirements while facilitating long-term support and deployment.

The LMV program is not just about vehicle replacement; it also has the potential to bolster the UK’s Midlands industrial base by creating skilled jobs. The initiative aims to generate new roles across the supply chain both within the UK and internationally, should Team LionStrike be selected for the project.

John Borton, Managing Director of Weapon Systems UK, expressed confidence in the team’s ability to meet the UK Government’s defense capacity goals. He highlighted the importance of innovation and technical excellence, asserting that the combined expertise of the team will enhance the British military’s mobile combat capabilities and keep them competitive on the battlefield.

The Infantry Squad Vehicle, which serves as the backbone of Team LionStrike’s offering, is based on General Motors’ Chevrolet Colorado ZR2 midsize pickup. It has the capacity to transport up to 3,200 pounds (1,451 kilograms) of cargo, accommodating up to nine personnel. Notable features include a 275-horsepower Duramax turbo diesel engine, a six-speed automatic transmission, a rollover protection system, and infrared lights. The ISV can also facilitate the optional integration of counter-drone laser energy weapons, machine guns, and grenade launchers. Furthermore, it is designed for transport via heavy-lift helicopters and can be low-velocity air-dropped from large military transport aircraft.

As the British Army looks toward the future of its mobility needs, Team LionStrike aims to provide a cutting-edge solution that addresses both current operational requirements and long-term strategic goals.
