The UK Ministry of Defence has announced the successful delivery of the first batch of L3Harris T4 multi-mission bomb disposal unmanned ground vehicles (UGVs). These advanced vehicles are set to play a crucial role in supporting Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) teams tasked with neutralizing bomb threats across various locations, including the British Army and Royal Navy units in the UK, Cyprus, and Gibraltar.
The delivery of these robots is a significant milestone, forming part of a larger 32-million-pound ($43 million) contract for a total of 50 T4 UGVs. This initiative is being overseen by the DE&S Specialist Vehicles and Uncrewed Land Systems Team in collaboration with L3Harris.
The T4 system is engineered for high-risk operations and is specifically designed for bomb disposal as well as handling hazardous materials. With a robust construction, this medium-sized robot weighs approximately 154 pounds (70 kilograms), which includes its onboard batteries. An additional manipulator arm attaches to the UGV, adding 72 pounds (33 kilograms) to its overall weight.
One of the standout features of the T4 is its advanced control system along with high-definition cameras, which allow for the lifting, reaching, and manipulation of objects with remarkable human-like precision. The robot is equipped with a haptic feedback system, enabling operators to “feel” the interactions of the robotic arm with various objects. This feature is particularly beneficial, as it mirrors the user’s hand movements, making it easier to manipulate items with greater accuracy and significantly reducing the need for extensive training.
The T4’s operational capabilities are also impressive, as it can sustain its functions for over seven hours, providing vital support for EOD and hazardous materials teams during extended missions. To navigate challenging environments, the robot is fitted with a skid-steer track system that allows it to reach speeds exceeding 5 miles (8 kilometers) per hour and to ascend stairs and slopes, further enhancing its operational versatility.
As the UK continues to bolster its defense capabilities, the introduction of the T4 UGVs represents a forward-thinking approach to managing explosive threats, leveraging cutting-edge technology to ensure the safety of personnel and the public.
