Spanish Government Approves Construction of Two New Offshore Patrol Vessels for Navy

The Spanish government has taken a significant step in bolstering its naval capabilities by approving the contracting process for Navantia to design and construct two new Buques de Acción Marítima (BAM)-class offshore patrol vessels for the Spanish Navy. This addition will enhance the operational fleet, which currently includes six BAM vessels, thereby augmenting the Navy’s maritime surveillance and security capabilities.

The financial allocation for this procurement is set at 716 million euros (approximately $847 million), which also hinges on advancements over previous vessel models in terms of operational functions and living conditions for the crew. The engineering phase is expected to commence immediately following the contract sign-off, with actual production slated to begin in the first half of 2027.

The new vessels will feature a suite of upgrades, including an advanced combat system and a next-generation integrated platform management system, alongside improvements in communication and navigation technologies. Furthermore, they are designed to accommodate unmanned vehicles, incorporate enhanced cybersecurity protocols, and provide better workspaces and medical facilities. Expanded living accommodations for the crew highlight a commitment to improving the quality of life aboard these vessels.

Construction will take place at Navantia’s facilities in Puerto Real, a site known for its sophisticated technology and high automation levels. The engineering work will leverage digital tools from Navantia’s ELCANO program, which employs Siemens technologies to streamline the design and production processes.

These enhancements are expected to significantly fortify the Spanish Navy’s ability to tackle emerging maritime security challenges while simultaneously prioritizing the welfare of its personnel.
