Viasat Wins Multi-Year Contract to Develop Satellite Encryption System for US Space Force

Viasat has announced a significant multi-year contract with the US Space Force’s Space Systems Command to develop a cutting-edge encryption system aimed at enhancing the cybersecurity of satellites. This initiative underscores the pressing need for robust security measures in the face of evolving cyber threats targeting space assets.

Under this agreement, the California-based company will deploy its Defense and Advanced Technologies division to create technology specifically designed to secure the data transmissions between satellites and ground stations. This project involves the design and construction of space-ready hardware, which will be integrated with Viasat’s certified ground equipment for subsequent testing.

Central to this endeavor is Viasat’s End Cryptographic Unit, a device engineered to protect signals both prior to launch and during orbit. This innovative unit is intended to counteract various communication threats while adhering to crucial specifications regarding weight, size, and power consumption—parameters that are vital in spacecraft design.

In addition to developing the encryption unit, Viasat will enhance its Ground Operating Equipment, which is integral for testing the next generation of satellite communication systems. This upgraded platform will be capable of managing more complex encryption keys and algorithms, thereby making it significantly more challenging for unauthorized entities to disrupt or intercept transmissions.

David Schmolke, vice president of mission connections and cybersecurity at Viasat Government, highlighted the company’s dedication to partnering with the US Space Force. He emphasized the importance of modern cryptographic solutions in addressing both current and future cyber threats. Schmolke stated, “We are committed to supporting future capabilities of integrated space-crypto solutions to ensure that mission-critical data and satellite access controls are protected.”

As cybersecurity in the realm of space becomes increasingly important, Viasat’s initiatives aim to fortify the integrity and confidentiality of satellite communications, reinforcing the broader mission of safeguarding national security assets.
