TEKEVER to Build Largest Drone Manufacturing Facility in UK to Boost Defense Production

A major development is underway in the UK as Portuguese defense firm TEKEVER announces plans to establish its most extensive drone manufacturing facility. This initiative aligns with London’s strategy to bolster domestic weapons production in the face of evolving global defense needs. The new facility will occupy 254,000 square feet within the renowned Spectrum Building in Swindon and is slated to open its doors in summer 2026, marking TEKEVER’s fourth operational site in the UK.

This manufacturing hub is part of TEKEVER’s ambitious Overmatch program, which includes a staggering £400 million ($545 million) investment dedicated to British drone production and advancements in artificial intelligence for warfare. The facility will manage the entire production cycle of unmanned aerial systems, encompassing prototyping, design, and large-scale manufacturing.

In a significant first, the core production of TEKEVER’s AR5 drones will occur within the UK, complemented by increased production of the AR3 and the new AR3 EVO variant. Local flight validation for these drones will take place in the nearby town of Wroughton.

Karl Brew, head of the TEKEVER Defense Unit, expressed pride in contributing to the economic growth of a town with a rich manufacturing history. He noted that the new facility would enhance the company’s capacity to innovate and adapt to the rapidly changing demands of its clientele. Brew emphasized the commitment to transforming the UK’s defense industry into a leading global player.

Local officials have voiced their support for this development. Swindon North MP Will Stone conveyed his pride in TEKEVER’s choice of Swindon for its expansion, highlighting the project’s role in his vision for establishing a “Drone Cluster of excellence,” which aims to create well-paying jobs and provide educational and training opportunities for the local youth.

Councillor Jim Robbins, leader of Swindon Borough Council, considered TEKEVER’s investment in the Spectrum Building a significant endorsement of the region’s efforts to attract high-tech firms. He expressed optimism about showcasing Swindon’s strategic advantages and innovation capabilities to cement its reputation as a national leader in defense manufacturing.

This investment comes as the UK government ramps up funding in drone technology and artificial intelligence, responding to a global trend where militaries are increasingly integrating autonomous systems into their operations. The defense budget for 2024 alone has reached £31.7 billion ($42 billion), illustrating the government’s commitment to strengthening the national defense industry.

Defense Secretary John Healey asserted that the establishment of this new factory exemplifies the government’s directive to utilize defense as a catalyst for economic growth throughout the UK, reinforcing both national security and the economy simultaneously.
