France Suspends Counter-Terrorism Cooperation with Mali Following Diplomatic Incident

Paris has taken significant diplomatic steps in response to recent tensions with Mali, abruptly suspending counter-terrorism cooperation and expelling two Malian diplomats following the arrest of a French envoy in Bamako. A French diplomatic source disclosed the developments, highlighting a growing rift between the two nations.

The French national was apprehended last month under suspicions of working for France’s intelligence services. Malian authorities have accused unnamed “foreign states” of attempting to destabilize the country, exacerbating an already complex security situation. In a firm retaliation, Mali ordered five staff members of the French embassy in Bamako to leave the country, adding to the escalating diplomatic friction.

The expelled diplomats have been given a deadline until Saturday to exit France, which underscores the urgency of the situation. Paris has expressed its commitment to resolving the matter swiftly, emphasizing that its detained envoy should be released under diplomatic immunity. French officials have described Mali’s accusations as “unjustified,” underscoring their concerns about the integrity of diplomatic relations.

In August, France indicated it was engaged in discussions with Mali to address misunderstandings and secure the envoy’s immediate release. However, as tensions mount, the French source suggested that more measures may be on the horizon if their national is not freed soon.

Adding to the turmoil, Mali’s ruling junta announced last month the detention of dozens of soldiers for alleged attempts to stage a coup against the government. The country has been embroiled in a severe security crisis since 2012, complicated by violent activities from groups linked to Al-Qaeda and the Islamic State, alongside increasing actions from criminal gangs.

Mali’s leadership, under President Assimi Goita, has shifted its foreign alliances. Following two coups in 2020 and 2021, the junta has distanced itself from Western allies, including France, opting instead to strengthen ties with Russia in a bid for enhanced national sovereignty. This pivot has further strained relations with former colonial powers and raised questions about the long-term implications for security and stability in the region.
