Chinese Aircraft Carrier Fujian Achieves Breakthrough with Electromagnetic Catapults

In a significant advancement for its naval capabilities, the People’s Liberation Army Navy has successfully launched various military aircraft from its Fujian aircraft carrier using an electromagnetic catapult system. This breakthrough marks Fujian as China’s first domestically constructed aircraft carrier equipped with such advanced technology.

The Fujian carrier has demonstrated compatibility with several key aerial assets, including the J-15T and J-35 stealth fighter jets, as well as the KJ-600 early warning and command aircraft. This capability enhances the operational flexibility and efficiency of the Chinese navy, enabling rapid and effective deployment of aircraft during missions.

Contrasting with China’s previous carriers, the CNS Liaoning and CNS Shandong, which utilize a ski-jump deck for launching aircraft, the Fujian features a flat flight deck designed to accommodate its electromagnetic launch and recovery system. This innovation is expected to improve the overall performance and effectiveness of aircraft operations at sea.

With a substantial full-load displacement exceeding 80,000 tonnes (approximately 176 million pounds), Fujian is among the largest aircraft carriers in service. The successful testing and operation of its electromagnetic catapult system solidify China’s position as a growing naval power, showcasing technological advancements that could reshape maritime military strategies.
