India Appoints First Mushroom Scientist as BSI Director
In a historic move, Dr. Kanad Das took charge as the 13th Director of the Botanical Survey of India (BSI) on 25 September 2025, becoming the first mycologist (mushroom scientist) to lead the institution.
The BSI, established in 1890 and functioning under the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC), is headquartered in Kolkata with 11 regional centres and 4 supporting units. Its mission is to explore, document, and conserve India’s plant wealth.
Dr. Das is internationally acclaimed for his work in fungal taxonomy, having discovered over 165 new mushroom species and two new genera, marking a major milestone for India’s botanical research community.
UPI Goes Live in Qatar
India’s Unified Payments Interface (UPI) has officially launched in Qatar, beginning with duty-free outlets at Hamad International Airport, Doha. This development makes Qatar the eighth country to accept UPI, following Bhutan, Nepal, Singapore, France, UAE, Mauritius, and Sri Lanka.
The expansion, enabled by a partnership between NPCI International Payments Ltd (NIPL), Qatar National Bank (QNB), and NETSTARS (Japan), allows Indian travelers to make seamless real-time QR code-based payments via apps such as PhonePe, Google Pay, and BHIM.
This move reduces dependence on foreign currency and card charges. Travelers must, however, enable international payments, check transaction limits, and confirm merchant availability before use.
Türkiye–US Strategic Civil Nuclear Deal
During President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan’s visit to the White House on 25 September 2025, Türkiye and the United States signed a Strategic Civil Nuclear Cooperation Agreement.
The pact strengthens bilateral relations in high-tech nuclear energy and is expected to influence regional power dynamics. Key areas include:
- Large-scale nuclear power plants
- Deployment of Small Modular Reactors (SMRs)
Türkiye already has an ongoing nuclear project – the Akkuyu Nuclear Power Plant, built by Russia’s Rosatom in Mersin province at a cost of $20 billion. It will host four VVER reactors with a total capacity of 4,800 MW, with the first unit scheduled for 2026.
India’s First EV Truck Fleet at JNPA

Flagged off by Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, the fleet of 50 trucks is equipped with swappable batteries, enabling quick replacements and minimizing downtime. Plans are in place to expand to 80 trucks by year-end and achieve 90% electrification of the 600-truck fleet by December 2026.
A dedicated battery swapping station was also inaugurated, positioning JNPA as a leader in green port operations.
