Mission for Aatmanirbharta in Pulses: A Step Towards Agricultural Self-Reliance

In a landmark decision to strengthen India’s agricultural foundation, the Union Cabinet on October 1, 2025, approved the Mission for Aatmanirbharta in Pulses, a six-year initiative running from 2025–26 to 2030–31. With a substantial investment of ₹11,440 crore, the programme seeks to enhance domestic pulses production, minimize import dependency, and secure livelihoods for nearly 2 crore farmers.

Why the Mission is Important

India holds the distinction of being the world’s largest producer and consumer of pulses, yet it imports nearly 15–20% of its demand to bridge the supply gap. By increasing domestic output, the mission not only strengthens food security but also uplifts millions of farmers who depend on pulse cultivation for income.

Key Targets of the Mission

  • Expand cultivation area to 310 lakh hectares
  • Boost yield to 1,130 kg per hectare
  • Achieve total production of 350 lakh tonnes
  • Reach and benefit around 2 crore farmers through structured interventions

Major pulse crops covered under this mission include Tur (Arhar), Urad (Black Gram), Masoor (Lentil), Moong (Green Gram), and Chana (Gram).

Institutions such as the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR), established in 1929 and headquartered in New Delhi, and the National Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Federation (NAFED), set up in 1958, will play a vital role in supporting this initiative. Moreover, the Commission for Agricultural Costs and Prices (CACP), which recommends the Minimum Support Price (MSP) for 22 crops including pulses, will continue to safeguard farmers’ interests.

Technology for Wildlife Conservation: The Gaj Rakshak App

Addressing the increasing incidents of human-elephant conflict in Madhya Pradesh, authorities at the Bandhavgarh Tiger Reserve have introduced the Gaj Rakshak App. Developed with the support of the Madhya Pradesh Forest Department, the Wildlife Conservation Trust, and Kalpvag Company, the app offers real-time elephant movement updates.

Key features include:

  • Alerts via SMS, push notifications, calls, and sirens when elephants approach human settlements
  • Offline functionality to ensure connectivity in remote areas
  • Ability to upload photos, update herd status, and instantly share details with users in a 10 km radius

This technology-driven approach is expected to revolutionize elephant conservation and prevent conflicts.
