Smt Shobha Gupta, a seasoned professional with extensive experience in land management, has officially taken the helm as the Director General of Defence Estates (DGDE). She assumed her new role on September 30, 2025, succeeding in an important leadership capacity within the Indian Defence Estates Service (IDES).

Smt Gupta, a member of the 1990 batch of IDES, has built an impressive portfolio throughout her career. She has served as the Chief Executive Officer in various Cantonment Boards, showcasing her ability to oversee complex governance structures. Her role as Defence Estates Officer across several Circles further highlights her extensive expertise in managing defence land issues. Additionally, she has held pivotal positions such as Director Defence Estates for Central Command and Principal Director, Defence Estates for both the South-West and Western Commands.

Her reputation in the field is characterized by her professional competence, unwavering integrity, and dynamic leadership style. These qualities have earned her recognition not only among her peers but also within the broader framework of defence land administration.

The DGDE is tasked with the management of an extensive portfolio, overseeing approximately 18 lakh acres of defence land throughout India. The Directorate operates under six Commands, 38 Defence Estates Circles, and 61 Cantonment Boards, playing a vital role in the management of defence land and the provision of civic services in cantonment areas.

Smt Gupta’s appointment comes at a crucial time as the DGDE seeks to enhance the efficiency, transparency, and professionalism of defence estates management.
