US Air Force awards $13.6 million contract for advanced drone engine development to Minco Technologies

The US Air Force has taken a significant step towards enhancing its unmanned aerial capabilities by awarding a substantial $13.6 million contract to Minco Technologies, based in Tennessee. This partnership aims to develop and demonstrate a next-generation drone engine that promises to drastically improve fuel efficiency.

This innovative propulsion system, known as the Modular Operationally Resilient Fuel-Flexible Extreme-Efficiency UAS-Engine System, is anticipated to reduce logistical fuel supply requirements by half, according to a recent Pentagon contract notice. The project will be executed in Cookeville, Tennessee, with an expected completion date set for August 30, 2028.

The main focus of this initiative is to enhance the endurance and survivability of unmanned systems in contested environments. While specific technical details are not yet available, the new engine is engineered for fuel flexibility, meaning it will be capable of utilizing a variety of fuels. This feature is particularly critical as it aims to bolster logistical resilience during operations in areas where traditional supply chains may be threatened.

By implementing this advanced technology, US forces will have the capability to deploy unmanned systems further away from established bases, thereby extending operational ranges and durations. This is increasingly necessary in modern military operations, where maintaining a logistical edge can greatly influence mission success.

In a related development, five NATO countries have also pursued advancements in their military capabilities. They have ordered a next-generation hybrid power system for their Patriot air defense batteries, which is expected to triple operational efficiency by significantly reducing daily refueling requirements for each battalion. This system, supplied by Germany’s VINCORION, aims to decrease the number of resupply missions needed, thereby lowering the exposure of troops to potential attacks.

Both initiatives highlight a collective effort to enhance military effectiveness through improved logistics and operational resilience in increasingly challenging environments.
