Khaled El-Enany Poised to Become First Arab UNESCO Chief
Egypt’s former Minister of Tourism and Antiquities, Dr. Khaled El-Enany, is set to create history as the first Arab to lead UNESCO. He is expected to succeed France’s Audrey Azoulay and assume the role of Director-General in early 2026 for a four-year term.
The final phase of his appointment will take place during the UNESCO General Conference in November 2025, where all 194 member nations will cast their votes.
If confirmed, El-Enany’s leadership will mark a significant milestone, as it would be the first time an Arab representative heads the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO)—a body central to promoting global cooperation in education, science, culture, and heritage.
