Estonia has made a significant step in bolstering its military capabilities by establishing a new unit within its defense forces. This initiative aims to expedite military modernization and enhance the nation’s long-term defense readiness.
Defence Minister Hanno Pevkur announced the creation of the “Future Capability and Innovation Command,” which will concentrate on developing and testing cutting-edge defense solutions in collaboration with the local defense industry. The move comes in response to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, which has underscored the rapidly changing dynamics of modern warfare and the critical need for innovative defense strategies.
Pevkur emphasized the importance of this new command in ensuring Estonia is equipped to face evolving threats. “The war in Ukraine has shown how quickly the battlefield is changing and how important it is to develop innovative defense capabilities,” he stated. The command’s objectives include testing, developing, and implementing future defense technologies in partnership with the defense sector.
Maj. Ivo Peets, who will lead the new command, highlighted a multifaceted approach to innovation. He noted that it will not solely focus on inventing new technologies but will also aim to enhance and effectively implement existing resources and practices within Estonia, drawing from both military and civilian sectors. This approach is intended to bridge gaps and accelerate technological development in defense methodologies.
The establishment of this command forms part of Estonia’s ambitious defense development strategy, which allocates €10 billion (approximately $11.5 billion) over the years 2026 to 2029. This strategy includes plans for new air defense systems, strengthening long-range strike capabilities, and improving overall military preparedness.
In line with this strategic vision, next year’s national defense budget has been set at €2.4 billion ($2.7 billion), demonstrating Estonia’s unwavering commitment to security in light of increasing regional challenges.
