Leonardo DRS Wins US Defense Department Counter-Drone Competition with Innovative Electronic Warfare System

Leonardo DRS has achieved a significant milestone by securing the top position in a recent competition organized by the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) focused on countering drone threats. This accomplishment highlights the effectiveness of the company’s innovative electronic warfare system, which is engineered to detect and neutralize unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs).

The competition took place during a showcase organized by the DoD’s Joint Counter-small Unmanned Aircraft Systems Office, where Leonardo DRS presented its advanced Ring Counter-Unmanned Systems (C-UxS) technology. This cutting-edge system employs proprietary radio frequency-based electronic warfare methods that allow for the identification, tracking, and neutralization of drones—regardless of whether they are launched from air, land, or sea.

During the demonstration, the Ring system effectively detected and identified mock enemy drones before successfully neutralizing them, even in challenging electromagnetic environments. Leonardo DRS emphasized that this versatile system can be seamlessly integrated into current counter-drone and air defense operations, facilitating quick deployment for front-line military units.

The significance of this demonstration occurs against the backdrop of an increasing push by the Department of Defense to bolster defenses against the rising threat posed by unmanned aerial systems. As drones become more capable, affordable, and widely accessible, there is a heightened need for robust countermeasures. In response, the Pentagon is advancing multiple initiatives aimed at detecting and neutralizing these aerial threats in various operational contexts.

One notable initiative in this domain is the Mobile-Low, Slow Small Unmanned Aircraft Integrated Defeat System (M-LIDS), where Leonardo DRS functions as the prime contractor. M-LIDS is designed to provide rapid, deployable solutions to counter small UAVs, enabling ground forces to effectively respond to drone incursion in real time. Another integral program, the SGT Stout Maneuver Short Range Air Defense initiative, integrates mission equipment packages that combine radar, electronic warfare, and counter-UAS technologies within mobile air defense units.

As concerns about the proliferation of unmanned aerial systems continue to rise, the successful demonstration of Leonardo DRS’s Ring C-UxS system positions the company as a leader in the ongoing development of effective counter-drone technologies.
