World Osteoporosis Day 2025

Observed every year on October 20, World Osteoporosis Day serves as a global reminder of the importance of bone health. The day launches a year-long campaign aimed at increasing awareness about the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of osteoporosis and other metabolic bone disorders.

In 2025, the Ministry of Ayush has emphasised the need for early prevention and lifestyle modifications to combat osteoporosis — a condition often referred to as the “silent disease” because it progresses without symptoms until a fracture occurs. The campaign focuses on promoting Ayurvedic approaches for preventive and restorative bone care.

Osteoporosis typically develops gradually due to the loss of bone strength and density. The first indication often appears in the form of a fracture — commonly in the hip, wrist, or spine — which may cause pain, posture deformities like kyphosis (hunching), and delayed recovery. The 2025 observance highlights the role of balanced nutrition, regular exercise, and early screening in maintaining lifelong bone health.

World Statistics Day

World Statistics Day is celebrated on October 20, a date chosen to highlight the crucial role of reliable data in shaping public policy and governance. The United Nations Statistical Commission first observed this day on October 20, 2010, and in 2025, the world marks the third edition of this event.

The observance underscores the values of data authenticity, integrity, and credibility, reaffirming the global commitment to evidence-based decision-making. It encourages nations to strengthen statistical systems for accurate and transparent information sharing, which is vital for sustainable development and global cooperation.

India and Brazil Form Strategic Alliance

In a major diplomatic development, Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva announced the creation of a strategic alliance with India aimed at strengthening cooperation in trade, technology, and global governance.

This announcement followed the visit of Brazilian Vice President Geraldo Alckmin to India, marking a new era in South-South cooperation. Both countries have set an ambitious target to increase bilateral trade from $12.19 billion in FY 2024–25 to $20 billion by 2030.

As active members of BRICS and the G20, India and Brazil share common goals such as:

  • Reforming international institutions like the WTO and UNSC.
  • Promoting multipolarity and South-South partnerships.
  • Reducing dependency on the Global North by fostering autonomous trade and strategic relations.

This alliance also lays the foundation for President Lula’s proposed visit to India in early 2026, further deepening bilateral engagement.

Centre Launches ₹600 Crore Kapas Kranti Mission

The Government of India has unveiled the ₹600 crore Kapas Kranti Mission, a transformative programme to boost the cultivation of long-staple cotton and enhance productivity in major cotton-growing regions.

Announced in Hyderabad by Union Minister G. Kishan Reddy, the mission focuses on scaling up successful agricultural models and integrating scientific and technological advancements into cotton farming.

Key components of the mission include:

  • Promotion of High-Density Plantation (HDP) methods to maximise yield.
  • Adoption of scientific and sustainable cultivation practices.
  • Development of technology-driven procurement and sales platforms.
  • Strengthening farmer education and training through field visits and workshops.

The mission aligns with the government’s vision of enhancing farmer income and promoting self-reliance in the cotton sector. Notably, the Minimum Support Price (MSP) for cotton has doubled over the last decade, reflecting the government’s continued commitment to agricultural growth.

Uruguay Legalises Euthanasia — A Landmark Decision

In a historic move, Uruguay has become the first Latin American country to legalise euthanasia through parliamentary legislation. The law permits medically assisted dying for patients suffering from incurable illnesses that cause unbearable pain, positioning Uruguay as a leader in bioethical and human rights reforms in the region.

While Colombia and Ecuador had previously permitted euthanasia via court rulings, Uruguay’s decision marks the first time such a law has been formally enacted in a predominantly Catholic nation.

This landmark decision may inspire similar debates and reforms in countries like Chile, Argentina, and Mexico, and aligns Uruguay with progressive nations such as Belgium, the Netherlands, Canada, and Spain, where euthanasia is allowed under strict medical and ethical guidelines.
