The UK government has announced a significant financial commitment to a potential multinational peacekeeping force in Ukraine, pledging over £100 million ($133 million) as preparations intensify for a post-conflict stabilization effort. This information comes from UK Defense Secretary John Healey, who emphasized that the funds have been earmarked to facilitate the quick deployment of the “Multinational Force Ukraine,” jointly led by the UK and France, contingent on a ceasefire agreement.
The proposed multinational force aims to comprise around 30 nations, initially commanded by a French general, with leadership transitioning to the UK after the first year. The core responsibilities of this force would include air policing to protect Kyiv’s airspace and executing maritime security operations. These operations would align with an ongoing mine-clearing mission in the Black Sea that involves Turkey, Romania, and Bulgaria, showcasing a collaborative effort to ensure security in critical regions.
Both the UK and France have previously indicated their willingness to send troops should the situation in Ukraine require it, reinforcing their commitment to regional stability.
However, these developments occur against a backdrop of stalled peace negotiations. President Volodymyr Zelensky recently conferred with US President Donald Trump at the White House as part of Washington’s renewed diplomatic efforts to negotiate a ceasefire between Ukraine and Russia. Reports from the meeting suggest that Trump encouraged Zelensky to consider potential territorial concessions, particularly in the contested eastern Donbas region, as a possible component of any peace agreement.
Sources familiar with the negotiations described the discussions as challenging, indicating that efforts to establish a diplomatic resolution to the ongoing conflict are encountering significant obstacles. Additionally, a proposed meeting between Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin in Budapest has been postponed, with Trump expressing concerns about the potential for the discussions to yield no productive outcomes.
