Saudi Arabia Ends the Kafala System

Saudi Arabia has officially abolished the Kafala (sponsorship) system, marking a landmark reform in the treatment of foreign workers. The system, long criticised as exploitative and restrictive, previously controlled millions of migrant labourers — including a significant Indian workforce.

The reform, announced in June 2025 and enforced in October 2025, is part of the Kingdom’s Vision 2030 programme aimed at economic modernisation and improving its global human rights image.

The Kafala system, first introduced in the 1950s across Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) nations, granted employers almost total authority over foreign workers, especially in domestic service, construction, and hospitality sectors. Indian workers frequently suffered from passport confiscation, unpaid or delayed wages, physical and mental abuse, and were often unable to travel home during emergencies.

This abolition is expected to bring greater freedom, legal protection, and dignity to millions of workers, particularly those from India and other South Asian nations.

Peru Declares State of Emergency in Lima

In response to a surge in crime and violent protests, Peru’s President José Jeri has declared a 30-day state of emergency in the capital Lima and the nearby province of Callao. The emergency allows the Peruvian Armed Forces to assist local police in restoring order and public safety.

The decision came after nationwide unrest, where violent demonstrations led to one death and over 100 injuries. Protesters have been demanding stronger government action on crime, economic stability, and social welfare, reflecting growing frustration with the worsening urban security conditions.

Rodrigo Paz Becomes Bolivia’s New President

In a major political shift, Rodrigo Paz, a 58-year-old senator advocating for economic liberalisation, has been elected President of Bolivia, ending nearly two decades of socialist governance started under Evo Morales.

Paz won with 54.5% of the vote, defeating former President Jorge Quiroga, signalling a decisive public demand for change amid Bolivia’s ongoing economic crisis. His leadership is expected to reorient Bolivia’s foreign policy, moving away from alliances with Venezuela, Cuba, and China, and seeking stronger economic ties with Western countries for trade and investment.
