General Dynamics to Supply Next-Gen Reconnaissance Vehicles for German Army

General Dynamics European Land Systems (GDELS) has secured a significant contract to deliver next-generation reconnaissance vehicles for the German Army’s Reconnaissance Corps. Under this contract, valued at approximately 3 billion euros ($3.48 billion), GDELS is set to supply a fleet of 274 Luchs 2 reconnaissance vehicles. Deliveries are planned to take place between 2029 and 2032.

In addition to the vehicles themselves, the contract encompasses a range of support services, including training equipment, simulators, and comprehensive logistical support. Notably, there is an option to procure an additional 82 vehicles in the future, emphasizing the potential for expanded capabilities within the German Army.

Thomas Kauffmann, Chief Sales Officer and Managing Director of GDELS Deutschland, expressed the company’s pride in being chosen as the prime contractor. He stated, “It is both an honor and an obligation for us to have been selected for the development and delivery of the new reconnaissance vehicle for the Bundeswehr’s Army Reconnaissance Force.” Kauffmann highlighted the competitive nature of the acquisition process and underscored GDELS’s commitment to delivering the vehicles on time and within budget.

The Luchs 2 reconnaissance vehicle, built on the advanced Piranha 6×6 wheeled platform, is set to replace the existing Fennek light 4×4 vehicles. This next-generation vehicle promises enhanced capabilities, including cutting-edge networked reconnaissance sensors and improved mobility. Additionally, the design minimizes acoustic and thermal signatures, essential features for modern reconnaissance missions.

As part of the vehicle’s armament, a separate agreement is anticipated with Rheinmetall for the procurement of up to 310 25mm KBA automatic cannons. These cannons are optimized for medium-range fire support, boasting an effective range of 2,700 meters (8,858 feet) and a rapid-fire capability of up to 600 rounds per minute.

The supply chain for the Luchs 2 includes key partnerships with Hensoldt Optronics, which will provide the sensor suite, and e.sigma, responsible for delivering the training simulators. Saab Bofors Dynamics Switzerland is also on board to supply essential camouflage equipment for the vehicles.

GDELS anticipates that the Luchs 2 will weigh around 25 tons, with a payload capacity of 7.5 tons, making it a formidable asset for the German Army’s reconnaissance efforts in the years to come.
