Negotiations between Pakistan and Afghanistan aimed at establishing a lasting truce have come to an impasse, with Pakistan’s Information Minister Attaullah Tarar announcing on social media that the discussions failed to yield a satisfactory outcome. After four days of discussions in Istanbul, mediated by Qatar and Turkey, Tarar expressed disappointment with the Afghan delegation’s approach, citing a lack of commitment to core issues and a tendency to deflect blame.

Tensions between the two nations have escalated following their most severe border clashes in years. These hostilities intensified after a series of explosions in Kabul on October 9, which the Taliban authorities attributed to Pakistan. Accusations have festered in recent years, with Pakistan alleging that Afghanistan provides refuge to militant groups responsible for conducting attacks within its territory.

Following an initial ceasefire that lasted only 48 hours, a renewed truce was established on October 19 after further negotiations in Doha. However, Tarar emphasized that Pakistan had engaged in dialogue with goodwill but accused Afghanistan of continuing its support for elements considered hostile to Pakistan’s security.

“We will continue to take all possible measures necessary to protect our people from the menace of terrorism,” he asserted, affirming Pakistan’s commitment to dismantling terrorist networks and their supporters. The statement reflects a broader concern over security and stability in the region, indicating Pakistan’s readiness to take action to safeguard its citizens.

There has been no immediate response from the Afghan government regarding these developments.
