Virginia Firm Collaborates with Norwegian Companies to Enhance Maritime GPS Resilience

Virginia-based NAL Research has announced a strategic collaboration with Tschudi Shipping and SGM Technology, two prominent firms from Norway, to develop an innovative maritime solution designed to protect vessels operating in environments where GPS signals may be compromised.

The joint project has resulted in the creation of PntGuard, a comprehensive navigational support system that provides immediate alerts to ship crews in cases where their vessel’s positioning may be at risk. This advancement is particularly crucial for vessels navigating through areas where GPS signals can be disrupted or spoofed, which is a growing concern in maritime operations.

PntGuard is designed with two integral components: a receiver that connects to a Positioning, Navigation, and Timing (PNT) service, and a bridge display that presents crucial information to the ship’s crew. The display not only indicates the vessel’s actual position in real-time but also reveals any altered or spoofed GPS signals that may pose a threat to navigation accuracy.

With maritime threats evolving, the collaboration underscores a commitment to enhancing the resilience of maritime operations. This cutting-edge technology aims to safeguard vessels from potential navigational pitfalls and improve overall maritime security.
