Ukraine Bolsters Naval Defense with Swedish and Norwegian CB90 Fast Assault Boats

In a significant move to bolster its naval capabilities, Ukraine has welcomed new CB90 fast assault boats supplied by Sweden and Norway. This strategic enhancement aims to strengthen the country’s coastal defense and riverine operations amid its ongoing conflict with Russia.

Commander of the Ukrainian Navy, Oleksiy Neizhpapa, announced that the latest influx of CB90-class boats has enabled Ukraine to form a full division of these advanced vessels. This development is expected to significantly enhance Kyiv’s operational capabilities, enabling more effective troop landings, maritime patrols, and the safeguarding of civilian shipping routes.

The CB90 boats are renowned for their high-speed performance, agility, and shallow-draft maneuverability, making them a staple within many NATO fleets. Their modular design allows for customizable weapon configurations that can be tailored to meet various combat scenarios.

Ukrainian crews have undergone rigorous training to become proficient in operating these advanced systems, which have been adapted to align with modern combat needs. Neizhpapa expressed confidence in the capabilities of these vessels, having tested them personally, stating they will serve as a formidable asset for Ukrainian forces.

The transfer of these boats was made possible through the Coalition of Maritime Capabilities, a multinational initiative aimed at supporting Ukraine’s naval modernization efforts. This coalition highlights the ongoing commitment from Western allies to strengthen Ukraine’s military amidst sustained aggression from Russia.

The support from Sweden and Norway is part of a broader framework of military assistance, including the provision of US-made F-16 fighter jets and British long-range Storm Shadow cruise missiles. Furthermore, Ukraine has received coastal radar systems and mine-clearing vessels through the UK-led Maritime Capability Coalition, while Denmark and the Netherlands have contributed additional patrol craft and logistical training, enhancing Ukraine’s maritime reach in the strategically vital Black Sea.

In addition to naval support, allied nations are also reinforcing Ukraine’s air defense and artillery capabilities. Germany has supplied IRIS-T SLM air defense systems, and the United States has authorized a new shipment of HIMARS rocket launchers and counter-drone technology, underscoring the international solidarity behind Ukraine’s defense strategy in this protracted conflict.
