Maduro Accuses US of Fabricating War Amid Military Buildup in Caribbean

Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro has reportedly sought military assistance from Russian President Vladimir Putin amid escalating tensions with the United States. This request, detailed in internal US government documents, highlights Maduro’s urgency for support to enhance Venezuela’s military capabilities as concerns about US military operations in the region intensify.

Specifically, Maduro is requesting assistance in repairing and upgrading military aircraft, overhauling defensive radar systems, and potentially acquiring missiles. These developments signal Venezuela’s efforts to bolster its military in the face of increased US pressure.

In addition to Russia, Venezuela has also reached out to China and Iran for further support. A communication to Chinese President Xi Jinping reportedly emphasized the need for “expanded military cooperation” to counter perceived US aggression and urged Chinese firms to expedite the production of radar detection systems for Venezuelan use.

Venezuela’s discussions with Iran are similarly focused on military enhancement, including a planned shipment of military equipment, GPS jammers, and drones with operational ranges of up to 1,000 kilometers (620 miles). However, the responses from both China and Iran remain unclear at this time.

In a notable development, a Russian Ilyushin Il-76 cargo plane, which has been sanctioned by the US, recently arrived in Caracas. Flight data indicates that this aircraft navigated a route over Africa to circumvent Western airspace, illustrating the strategic maneuvers being employed to facilitate military assistance.

The backdrop of these requests comes against a rising tide of US military activity in the Caribbean. Over recent months, the United States has significantly ramped up its naval presence in the region, executing numerous operations against alleged drug traffickers operating from Venezuelan shores. These operations have reportedly resulted in substantial casualties, with at least 61 fatalities since September, although the Trump administration has yet to provide conclusive evidence linking the targeted vessels to trafficking activities. Maduro has vehemently denied these allegations.

The United States has further intensified its military posture by conducting flights near Venezuelan airspace using B-1B and B-52 bombers, in addition to deploying the USS Gerald R. Ford carrier strike group to Latin America and stationing 10 F-35 stealth fighters in Puerto Rico.

These developments underline the increasingly precarious security situation in the Caribbean and the lengths to which Maduro’s administration is willing to go in securing military support amid growing threats perceived from the US.
