In a recent development, Afghanistan’s Taliban government announced that the latest peace talks with Pakistan, held in Turkey, have ended in failure. The Taliban criticized Islamabad’s approach, describing it as “irresponsible and uncooperative.”
Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid expressed his disappointment in a social media post, stating that the Pakistani delegation attempted to shift security responsibilities solely onto the Afghan government. Mujahid claimed that Islamabad showed no commitment to addressing its own security concerns or those of Afghanistan. “The irresponsible and uncooperative attitude of the Pakistani delegation has not yielded any results,” he stated.
In contrast, Pakistan’s Information Minister Attaullah Tarar hinted the day prior that the negotiations were on the brink of collapse. He emphasized that Afghanistan needed to fulfill its commitments to counter terrorism, a promise that has reportedly not been upheld so far. Tarar asserted that Pakistan would take all necessary measures to protect its people and sovereignty.
The discussions took place in Istanbul on Thursday, with the aim of finalizing a truce that was originally agreed upon on October 19 in Qatar. This peace effort follows a series of violent clashes between the two countries, which have marked some of the deadliest confrontations since the Taliban regained control of Afghanistan in 2021.
