Thales has secured a significant contract to supply an Integrated Platform Management System (IPMS) to the Royal Thai Navy for the HTMS Chakri Naruebet (CVH 911) aircraft carrier. This initiative marks a crucial step in the modernization of the nearly 30-year-old vessel, enhancing its operational capabilities.
The IPMS is designed to serve as the central control hub for the aircraft carrier, allowing for streamlined management of various systems including propulsion, electrical networks, auxiliary machinery, and damage control through a unified interface. This modern solution will provide real-time data, automated decision-making support, and integration with navigation, simulation, and other onboard technologies. This integrated approach aims to enable quicker and more efficient responses to technical problems or emergencies that may arise during operations.
The HTMS Chakri Naruebet, measuring 183 meters (600 feet), is notable for being Thailand’s first and only aircraft carrier, as well as the sole carrier in Southeast Asia. Originally, the vessel was capable of transporting and deploying advanced aircraft, such as the AV-8S Harrier attack jets. While it has transitioned away from operating fixed-wing aircraft, it still supports helicopter and drone activities and engages in patrols and various training exercises.
Thales emphasized that the new IPMS will be customized to fit the unique specifications and operational requirements of the Chakri Naruebet. This adaptation is expected to enhance the efficiency of the systems while ensuring seamless integration with the carrier’s existing technology.
As part of this project, Thales will collaborate with Universal Communication Systems, its industrial partner based in Bangkok. They will oversee the transfer of technology necessary for local maintenance and long-term support of the IPMS, which aims to strengthen the domestic industrial defense capabilities of Thailand.
“Modernising the flagship vessel of the Royal Thai Navy is no easy task, and we are grateful for the trust placed in Thales to advance this long-awaited project,” stated Thales Thailand Director Nicolas Bernardin. He expressed confidence that the solution would not only meet the operational needs of the Royal Thai Navy but also enhance Thailand’s maritime sovereignty through innovative technological advances.
