Second S-80 Class Submarine Launched by Navantia for Spanish Navy

Navantia has marked a significant milestone with the launch of the second S-80 class submarine, Narciso Monturiol (S-82), at its Cartagena shipyard. This development further enhances the Spanish Navy’s next-generation undersea capabilities, paving the way for modern naval operations.

The launch process was comprehensive and meticulously planned, taking several hours and employing a floating dock. Safety protocols were rigorously adhered to, ensuring thorough checks both inside and outside the submarine.

Following its initial contact with water, the Narciso Monturiol will undergo a series of harbor tests. During this phase, engineers will assess all onboard systems, including fuel loading, battery charging, and propulsion checks, while the submarine remains moored. These preliminary tests are critical for verifying the vessel’s readiness as it prepares for subsequent sea trials.

Sea trials are set to follow, where the submarine will be evaluated for navigation capabilities, diving performance, and overall operational readiness. This phase will simulate real-world conditions to ensure the vessel meets the stringent safety and performance standards necessary for commissioning into the military.

The S-80 program, initiated in the early 2000s, aims to deliver up to six conventional, non-nuclear submarines to enhance the capabilities of the Spanish Navy. This program is crucial for replacing the aging Galerna-class fleet, which has been operational since the 1980s. The new submarines are designed to be modern, stealthy, and highly automated, capable of conducting prolonged underwater missions effectively.

In addition to maintaining national defense capabilities, the program strengthens Spain’s local defense industry, with Navantia serving as the Technical Design Authority for the class. The first submarine of this program, Isaac Peral (S-81), has already been delivered and is currently undergoing operational testing. Meanwhile, the third submarine, Cosme García (S-83), is under assembly, and construction of the fourth vessel, Mateo García de los Reyes (S-84), is in the preliminary stages.

The specifications of the S-80 class submarine are impressive. Each vessel measures 81 meters (266 feet) in length and has a beam of 12 meters (39 feet), accommodating over 30 personnel. One of its notable technological advancements is Navantia’s proprietary Bio-Ethanol Stealth Technology, which generates hydrogen for fuel cells, allowing for extended underwater missions of up to three weeks.

Equipped with a state-of-the-art combat suite developed in collaboration with Lockheed Martin, the S-80 class submarines integrate advanced sonar technology, electronic warfare systems, precise navigation capabilities, and comprehensive weapons control systems. These features enable engagement with a range of threats using torpedoes, underwater mines, cruise missiles, anti-ship missiles, and land-attack missiles.

The capabilities of the S-80 submarine are further highlighted by its operational depth of 460 meters (1,509 feet), a maximum speed of 19 knots (35 kilometers/22 miles per hour), and an impressive operational range of 8,000 kilometers (4,970 miles). As Spain moves forward with this cutting-edge maritime initiative, the Narciso Monturiol stands poised to play a pivotal role in enhancing the nation’s naval defense operations.
