Poland's Air Cavalry Brigade Receives First AW149 Helicopter to Modernize Fleet

Poland’s 25th Air Cavalry Brigade has reached a significant milestone in its modernization process with the delivery of its first AW149 helicopter, built at the PZL-Åšwidnik plant. This advancement marks a crucial step in replacing an aging Soviet-era fleet.

During a handover ceremony at the 7th Aviation Squadron, Defence Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz officially accepted this first helicopter from a total order of 32, a contract signed in 2022. This helicopter stands out not only as the 11th unit in the series but also as the first fully manufactured on Polish soil, highlighting the country’s commitment to enhancing domestic aerospace capabilities.

The AW149 helicopter is specifically designed to meet the operational requirements of the Polish Armed Forces, set to replace older models such as the Mi-8, Mi-17, and Mi-24. Its modular cabin design allows for the integration of various systems tailored for diverse missions, ranging from transport and medical evacuation to close support, reconnaissance, and combat logistics. As a result, the AW149 will play a pivotal role in missions involving troop and cargo transport, armed support, and surveillance.

In terms of specifications, the AW149 is derived from the civil-to-military variant of the AW139. This medium-lift, multi-role helicopter is powered by twin turboprop engines. It has a crew capacity designed for two pilots, plus space for 16 fully equipped troops. The helicopter boasts a maximum take-off weight of approximately 8,600 kilograms (19,000 pounds) and can achieve a top speed of around 310 kilometers per hour (192 miles per hour), providing the versatility needed for various tactical and logistical tasks.

Globally, the AW149 is already in service with several military operators. Thailand, for instance, was an early adopter, acquiring five of the helicopters for their utility and troop transport capabilities—key for navigating the nation’s challenging terrain. Similarly, Egypt has placed its own order for several AW149 helicopters, intended for maritime and operational utility functions.

As Poland continues to modernize its military assets, the integration of the AW149 symbolizes not only a shift away from older Soviet-era models but also a strengthening of the nation’s defense capabilities through enhanced domestic production.
