Ukraine has embarked on an ambitious initiative to develop a sovereign artificial intelligence system, often referred to as an “AI brain,” intended for applications in both military and civilian sectors. This strategic move aims to diminish the nation’s dependency on foreign AI models and to ensure that sensitive data remains under Ukrainian control.
The project is being spearheaded by the Ukrainian government in collaboration with Kyivstar, a prominent domestic telecommunications company. By utilizing Google’s open-source Gemma 3 large language model as a foundational framework, Ukraine aims to harness cutting-edge technology while maintaining sovereignty over its AI capabilities.
Mykhailo Fedorov, the Minister of Digital Transformation, highlighted the significance of this initiative, stating that it positions Ukraine on a path to becoming a leader in the field of artificial intelligence by the year 2030. The development of this national AI infrastructure is viewed as a pivotal step towards enhancing the country’s technological landscape, contributing to both national security and economic growth.
