Raytheon Partners with AWS to Enhance Satellite Data Processing and Mission Control

Raytheon has unveiled a strategic partnership with Amazon Web Services (AWS) aimed at enhancing satellite data processing and mission control operations. This collaboration is set to leverage scalable cloud-based solutions, utilizing AWS’s advanced artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) services to improve efficiencies in various operational aspects.

The initiative will integrate mission engineering and data collection capabilities with cloud services, enhancing decision-making processes, operational coordination, and overall flexibility. The partnership stands to deliver tools that assist both government and commercial customers of Raytheon in achieving national security objectives and space operational goals more effectively and responsively.

Erich Hernandez-Baquero, Raytheon’s Vice President of Space Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance, emphasized that this collaboration will expedite responsible AI innovation, enhance agility while ensuring the utmost security, optimize resource utilization, and improve systems to drive successful outcomes for clients.

With a focus on processing mission data via Raytheon systems on AWS Outposts, the collaboration aims to merge cloud-based functionalities with local operations. AWS Outposts is a comprehensive suite of fully managed services and hardware that extends AWS infrastructure into on-premises or edge locations, allowing cloud applications to operate locally under a unified management model.

Furthermore, the initiative encompasses command and control capabilities for satellite constellations, utilizing modular, software-defined systems that facilitate task scheduling and asset coordination. The mission management aspect is designed to scale efficiently, adding new capabilities through AWS’s serverless technologies, which allows applications to run without being tied to dedicated servers.

To enhance the deployment of AI and ML capabilities, the partnership also incorporates advanced AWS services, such as Amazon SageMaker and Amazon Bedrock. Amazon SageMaker serves as a fully managed service for developers to construct, train, and deploy machine learning models at scale. Meanwhile, Amazon Bedrock provides seamless access to foundation models via application programming interfaces (APIs), enabling organizations to integrate AI functionalities into their applications without the overhead of managing the underlying infrastructure.

This strategic collaboration between Raytheon and AWS marks a significant step forward in the integration of cloud technologies in defense and space operations, promising improved efficiency and agility in responding to dynamic operational requirements.
