Poland is set to transfer its remaining Soviet-era MiG-29 fighter jets to Ukraine in a strategic move to enhance its military collaboration, with a focus on acquiring drone technology from Ukraine. This development was announced by Poland’s Defense Minister Wladyslaw Kosiniak-Kamysz on a Polish public radio program.
The Polish military has been transitioning away from its outdated Soviet-designed aircraft, recently integrating American-made F-16s and South Korean FA-50s into its fleet. The country is also in the process of receiving 32 advanced F-35 fighter jets ordered from the United States.
Minister Kosiniak-Kamysz explained that the MiG-29s are approaching the end of their operational lifespan and will be withdrawn from service. He confirmed that discussions regarding their transfer to Ukraine are currently underway, with an emphasis on potentially receiving military technology in return, specifically in drone and missile capabilities.
Poland’s military assistance to Ukraine has intensified since Russia’s invasion in 2022, during which it donated many of its own MiG-29s. Reports indicate that Poland still possesses 14 of these aircraft. The defense minister emphasized the urgency of the ongoing talks, expressing a commitment to finalize the transfer swiftly.
In addition to the aircraft deal, Poland is already reaping the benefits of Ukrainian expertise in drone military training, highlighting Ukraine’s prowess in this area compared to other nations with which Poland maintains strong ties.
As a member of both the European Union and NATO, Poland has emerged as a key ally for Ukraine, playing a crucial role as a logistical hub for military and humanitarian aid to the embattled nation.
