International Universal Health Coverage Day

Every year on 12 December, the world observes International Universal Health Coverage (UHC) Day, a global reminder that access to quality and affordable healthcare is a fundamental right for all people. The day encourages world leaders, policymakers, and communities to strengthen healthcare systems so that no individual is pushed into poverty due to medical expenses.

The theme for UHC Day 2025 is “Unaffordable health costs? We’re sick of it!” — highlighting the urgent need to address the rising financial burden of healthcare on families worldwide.

The observance traces its origins to 12 December 2012, when the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) adopted a historic resolution urging nations to move faster toward achieving universal health coverage.

International Day of Neutrality

Also observed on 12 December, the International Day of Neutrality emphasizes the importance of a nation’s impartiality during conflicts. Neutrality allows countries to promote peace, prevent escalation, and support diplomatic dialogue in global disputes.

This day holds significant relevance for students of international relations and government exam aspirants, as it connects directly to global diplomacy and UN initiatives.

The UNGA officially declared the day on 2 February 2017, through Resolution 71/275, introduced by Turkmenistan, a nation that has maintained permanent neutrality since 12 December 1995.

World Inequality Report 2026

The World Inequality Report 2026, published by the World Inequality Lab, offers a detailed assessment of how global inequality continues to widen. Edited by renowned economists Lucas Chancel, Ricardo Gómez-Carrera, Rowaida Moshrif, and Thomas Piketty, the report highlights disparities across income, wealth, gender, geography, and environmental impact.

Despite unprecedented global wealth, its distribution remains extremely skewed:

Key Highlights

  • The top one-in-a-million wealth group collectively holds 3% of global wealth.
  • The top one-in-100 million (just 56 people worldwide) possess an average wealth of €53 billion each.

Inequality in India

  • Income inequality:
    • Top 10%: 58% of national income
    • Bottom 50%: 15%
  • Wealth inequality:
    • Richest 10%: 65% of total wealth
    • Top 1% alone: 40%

These statistics underscore a widening economic gap compared to earlier findings from the 2022 report.

DBS Bank Named Global Bank of the Year 2025

In December 2025, DBS Bank (headquartered in Singapore) was awarded the prestigious title of Global Bank of the Year 2025 by The Banker, a Financial Times Group publication. The award ceremony took place in London during the annual Bank of the Year Awards.

This is DBS’s third win in this category, previously earning the distinction in 2018 and 2021. Competing against 294 banks from 132 countries, DBS stood out for its strong digital transformation, financial resilience, and customer-centric approach.

The achievement also reinforces DBS’s reputation as it simultaneously holds two major global “Best Bank” titles — from Euromoney and The Banker. Since 2018, the bank has accumulated nine major global awards.
