First Woman President of the Press Club of India
In a landmark moment for Indian journalism, senior journalist Sangeeta Barooah Pisharoty has been elected as the first woman President of the Press Club of India (PCI). The announcement of the election results on 14 December 2025 marked a historic shift in one of the country’s most influential journalist bodies. Her election is widely seen as a positive step toward improving gender representation in media leadership, an area traditionally dominated by men.
Alongside the President, a new executive committee has taken charge of the organisation. Jatin Gandhi was elected Vice-President, Afzal Imam became Secretary General, P. R. Sunil assumed the role of Joint Secretary, while Aditi Rajput was elected Treasurer unopposed.
The Press Club of India, established in 1958 and headquartered in New Delhi, serves as a professional platform for journalists and media professionals. It plays a crucial role in protecting press freedom, upholding ethical journalism, and facilitating dialogue between the media and policymakers.
75th Death Anniversary of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel
On the 75th death anniversary of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid tribute to the legendary leader, remembering his lifelong dedication to national unity. Popularly known as the Iron Man of India, Sardar Patel was instrumental in shaping a united and strong India after independence.
Born on 31 October 1875 in Nadiad, Gujarat, into a farming family, Patel demonstrated exceptional determination and leadership from a young age. Following independence in 1947, he served as India’s first Deputy Prime Minister and Home Minister. His most significant achievement was the integration of more than 560 princely states into the Indian Union, ensuring the country’s territorial integrity.
Sardar Patel passed away on 15 December 1950, but his contributions remain timeless. The unveiling of the Statue of Unity in Gujarat in 2018, the world’s tallest statue, stands as a lasting symbol of his role in unifying the nation.
West Asia–North Africa: Prime Minister Modi’s Diplomatic Visit
Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Jordan, Ethiopia and Oman from 15 December reflects India’s deep-rooted civilisational and strategic engagement with the West Asia–North Africa (WANA) region. Historically, Indian traders, scholars and sailors maintained vibrant connections across the Indian Ocean, the Gulf region and even the Red Sea routes leading to Europe.
The visit, however, comes at a time of heightened instability. The Gaza conflict, rising regional tensions, and intense global power competition have made West Asia and the Red Sea region increasingly volatile. While India continues to engage major powers such as the US, China and Russia, its primary strategic focus remains the western Indian Ocean region.
India shares strong bilateral relations with all three host countries. Trade with Jordan stands at around $2.87 billion, largely centred on phosphates, phosphoric acid, chemicals and manufactured goods. Discussions are expected on expanding Indian investments in renewable energy, IT, artificial intelligence, and the Aqaba Special Economic Zone.
Oman is one of India’s key partners in the Gulf, with bilateral trade worth about $12.4 billion, driven mainly by oil, gas and fertiliser imports. The visit is likely to witness progress toward a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) to enhance trade and services.
Trade with Ethiopia remains modest at around $500 million, dominated by Indian exports. Strategically located in the Horn of Africa, Ethiopia plays a vital role in regional geopolitics. The Horn of Africa—comprising Ethiopia, Eritrea, Somalia and Djibouti—controls crucial maritime routes such as the Gulf of Aden, the Bab al-Mandab Strait, and the Red Sea, through which over $200 billion worth of Indian trade passes annually.
ISRO’s Upcoming Space Missions
The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has announced an ambitious plan to conduct seven launch missions by March next year, highlighting India’s growing capabilities in space technology and commercial launches. These missions include demonstrations of indigenous electric propulsion systems, quantum key distribution technology, and major steps toward human spaceflight.
India’s heaviest launch vehicle, LVM3, will place the Bluebird-6 communication satellite into orbit for US-based AST SpaceMobile under a commercial agreement with New Space India Limited (NSIL). The human-rated LVM3 will also carry the first uncrewed mission of Gaganyaan, featuring the humanoid robot Vyommitra.
Two uncrewed missions are planned before India sends its astronauts into low Earth orbit in 2027. Additionally, India’s first industry-built PSLV, manufactured by a HAL–L&T consortium, will launch the Oceansat satellite, along with the Indo-Mauritius Joint Satellite and LEAP-2 of Dhruva Space.
Other upcoming missions include the launch of EOS-N1, EOS-5 (GISAT-1A), and the TDS-01 satellite to test advanced technologies such as the High Thrust Electric Propulsion System (HTEP). This system will enable future all-electric satellites, making them lighter and more efficient while reducing reliance on chemical fuels.
