Veer Bal Diwas 2025: Remembering the Courage of Sahibzadas

Veer Bal Diwas is a nationally observed occasion in India that pays tribute to the unmatched bravery and sacrifice of young children in Indian history. Observed every year on 26 December, the day commemorates the martyrdom of the two younger sons of Guru Gobind Singh JiSahibzada Zorawar Singh and Sahibzada Fateh Singh.

In 1705, the two Sahibzadas were captured by Mughal authorities and were ordered to abandon their faith. Despite their tender age, they showed extraordinary courage and refused to renounce their beliefs, choosing martyrdom instead. Their sacrifice stands as a timeless symbol of faith, righteousness, and moral strength.

The observance of Veer Bal Diwas was officially announced by the Government of India in 2022, with the objective of inspiring children and youth to uphold the values of dharma, courage, sacrifice, and resilience.

Guru Gobind Singh Ji, the tenth Sikh Guru, was not only a spiritual leader but also a warrior, poet, and philosopher. He founded the Khalsa Panth in 1699 and had four sons, collectively remembered as the Sahibzadas:

  • Sahibzada Ajit Singh
  • Sahibzada Jujhar Singh
  • Sahibzada Zorawar Singh
  • Sahibzada Fateh Singh

126th Birth Anniversary of Sardar Udham Singh

The 126th birth anniversary of Sardar Udham Singh, observed on 26 December 2026, serves as a solemn reminder of India’s relentless struggle against colonial injustice. Sardar Udham Singh is remembered as a revolutionary who dedicated his life to avenging the Jallianwala Bagh massacre of 1919.

Born on 26 December 1899 in Sunam, Punjab, Udham Singh lost his parents early in life and grew up in the Central Khalsa Orphanage in Amritsar. It was here that he developed a deep sense of nationalism and witnessed the brutal realities of British rule.

A defining moment in his life came when he was present during the Jallianwala Bagh massacre, where British troops under General Reginald Dyer fired upon thousands of unarmed civilians. After waiting patiently for over two decades, Udham Singh carried out his historic act on 13 March 1940, assassinating Michael O’Dwyer at Caxton Hall in London. This act was a symbolic assertion of justice rather than revenge, cementing his legacy in India’s freedom struggle.

This initiative aligns with Article 350A and Article 29, which emphasize the protection of linguistic minorities and preservation of cultural heritage, while also promoting constitutional literacy and participatory democracy.
