Anu Garg Set to Become Odisha’s First Woman Chief Secretary

Odisha is poised to witness a historic moment in its administrative journey as senior IAS officer Anu Garg is scheduled to take charge as the first woman Chief Secretary of the state on January 1, 2026. Her appointment represents a major step forward in enhancing women’s representation in India’s top bureaucratic roles. She will succeed the present Chief Secretary Manoj Ahuja, who is set to retire on December 31, 2025.

Anu Garg brings with her extensive experience at both the state and central government levels. One of her most notable assignments was her tenure as Joint Secretary in the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) between November 2012 and April 2015, where she played a key role in high-level policy coordination. Additionally, she served as Joint Secretary in the Ministry of Textiles and the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare before returning to the Odisha cadre in 2017. Thailand and Cambodia Reach Ceasefire Agreement

Thailand and Cambodia have agreed to implement a ceasefire after weeks of intense border clashes, marking a crucial step towards reducing tensions between the two Southeast Asian neighbours. The confrontation was among the most severe in recent years and involved heavy use of artillery, rockets, and air power, leading to significant casualties and mass displacement of civilians on both sides.

According to a joint statement released by the defence ministries of both countries, the ceasefire came into effect at noon, with an understanding that existing troop positions would be maintained. Both sides also committed to refraining from deploying additional forces or advancing their military units.

The latest violence erupted in early December following the breakdown of an earlier ceasefire arrangement brokered in July. Although territorial disputes along the Thailand–Cambodia border have flared up periodically in the past, this episode marked the most intense fighting in several years, underscoring the fragile nature of regional peace.

Israel Becomes First Country to Recognise Somaliland

In a major geopolitical development, Israel has formally recognised Somaliland as an independent and sovereign nation, becoming the first country in the world to do so. The recognition was announced following a joint declaration signed by Israeli leadership and the President of Somaliland, carrying significant implications for Horn of Africa politics, regional diplomacy, and international legal norms.

Somaliland, a former British protectorate, declared independence in 1991 after the outbreak of civil war in Somalia. Since then, it has functioned as a de facto independent entity, maintaining relative peace, conducting elections, and establishing its own governance and security institutions. Despite this, the international community has continued to regard Somaliland as part of Somalia in line with the principle of territorial integrity.

Somalia strongly objected to Israel’s decision, describing it as an illegal act and a direct violation of its sovereignty. The move has sparked renewed debate over self-determination, recognition, and regional stability in the Horn of Africa.
