A significant advancement in South Korea’s military capabilities is underway, as the nation embarks on the development of its first stand-off electronic warfare (EW) aircraft. The ambitious project, led by LIG Nex1, comes with a hefty price tag of 1.56 trillion won (approximately $1.1 billion) and has recently received formal approval from the Defense Acquisition Program Administration.
The timeline for the completion of this complex initiative is set for June 2034. LIG Nex1 will collaborate with Korean Air to transform a Bombardier business jet into a sophisticated platform equipped to operate outside of hostile airspace. The primary mission of this aircraft will be to disrupt enemy radar and command networks, thereby bolstering South Korea’s defense capabilities.
This development marks a critical step in enhancing the country’s electronic warfare abilities, reflecting a broader trend within military circles to adapt and modernize existing platforms for operational efficiency and effectiveness.
