Hanwha Aerospace is on the verge of sealing a significant deal with Poland to export its advanced Chunmoo multiple launch rocket systems, according to reports from Yonhap News Agency. This anticipated agreement, reportedly valued at over 5 trillion won (approximately $3.4 billion), would engage not only Hanwha Aerospace but also the Polish government and WB Electronics, the country’s largest private defense enterprise.
This latest potential contract builds upon two previous Chunmoo-related agreements. The first was initiated in 2022 with a value exceeding 5 trillion won ($3.4 billion), followed by a second-phase contract signed in 2024 worth 2.2 trillion won ($1.5 billion). The continuity in these deals signifies a robust partnership between South Korean defense technology suppliers and Poland’s defense sector.
The Chunmoo multiple launch rocket system, a product of South Korea’s domestic development initiatives, boasts impressive capabilities. Designed for high effectiveness, the system can deliver concentrated rocket and missile fire over a range of 80 kilometers (approximately 50 miles), with a circular error probable of around 15 meters (49 feet), ensuring precision strikes.
Mobility is a hallmark of the Chunmoo system; it can reach a maximum road speed of about 80 kilometers (50 miles) per hour, allowing for swift maneuvering on the battlefield. In operational scenarios, it can become combat-ready in just seven minutes after arriving at a launch site, facilitating rapid firing and repositioning.
A standout feature of the Chunmoo system is its modular launcher architecture, which enables it to utilize a variety of munitions. By simply swapping out launch pods, the system can operate with short-, medium-, and longer-range guided rockets and missiles, catering to diverse mission requirements without the need for multiple launch vehicles.
As global defense trends shift toward versatile and rapidly deployable systems, this agreement with Poland marks a pivotal step for Hanwha Aerospace and reinforces its position in the international defense market.
