World Hindi Day 2026

World Hindi Day, also known as Vishwa Hindi Diwas, is observed annually on January 10 to highlight the global reach and cultural importance of the Hindi language. Hindi is not merely a means of communication but a powerful symbol of India’s traditions, emotions, and shared heritage.

The observance of World Hindi Day began officially in 2006 during the tenure of former Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh. The chosen date commemorates a historic moment from January 10, 1949, when Hindi was used for the first time in the United Nations General Assembly, marking its entry onto the global diplomatic stage.

To further strengthen Hindi’s international presence, the Government of India has been organizing World Hindi Conferences since 1975 through the Ministry of External Affairs. These conferences have been hosted in countries with large Indian-origin populations, including the United Kingdom, Mauritius, Fiji, Trinidad and Tobago, and the United States, reinforcing Hindi’s global cultural footprint.

Pravasi Bharatiya Divas (PBD) 2026

Pravasi Bharatiya Divas (PBD), celebrated on January 9, honors the contributions of the Indian diaspora to India’s social, economic, and cultural development. It acknowledges the vital role played by Non-Resident Indians (NRIs) and Persons of Indian Origin (PIOs) in strengthening India’s global presence.

Launched in 2003, the initiative aims to deepen engagement between India and its overseas community, which today numbers over 35 million people worldwide. While the event was initially held annually, since 2015 it has followed a biennial format to allow better planning and focused outcomes.

As 2026 is a non-convention year, no major central-level celebrations are scheduled. The 18th PBD Convention was held in Bhubaneswar, Odisha (January 8–10, 2025) with the theme “Diaspora Contribution to a Viksit Bharat”, featuring participants from more than 50 countries. The 19th edition is expected to take place in 2027.

UIDAI Launches Aadhaar Mascot ‘Udai’

The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has introduced a new Aadhaar mascot named ‘Udai (उदय)’ to enhance public engagement and simplify communication related to Aadhaar services.

Designed as a friendly and relatable character, Udai serves as a resident-centric communication companion. Its purpose is to make Aadhaar-related information more accessible and understandable, thereby bridging the gap between complex technology and everyday users.

The mascot will help citizens understand services such as Aadhaar updates and corrections, authentication and verification processes, offline Aadhaar verification, secure and selective sharing of Aadhaar data, and the responsible use of Aadhaar-linked technologies.

International Conference on Indian Languages

The Third International Conference on Indian Languages was inaugurated in New Delhi by Vice-President C. P. Radhakrishnan. Addressing the gathering, he described language as the “conscience of civilisation,” emphasizing its role in preserving history, values, and cultural continuity.

India’s linguistic diversity is constitutionally protected through the Eighth Schedule, which currently recognizes 22 languages. Originally, 14 languages were listed in 1950, with later additions such as Sindhi, Konkani, Manipuri, Nepali, Bodo, Dogri, Maithili, and Santhali. Articles 344(1) and 351 of the Constitution provide the framework for their official use and development, reflecting India’s pluralistic identity.

PIB Approval for Kamala Hydroelectric Project

India’s transition toward sustainable energy received a boost with the Public Investment Board’s approval of the Kamala Hydroelectric Project in Arunachal Pradesh. The project aligns with India’s commitment to achieving net-zero emissions by 2070.

Located on the Kamala River across the districts of Kamle, Kra Daadi, and Kurung Kumey, the project was earlier known as the Subansiri Middle Hydroelectric Project. It will be developed under the Build-Own-Operate-Transfer (BOOT) model, with NHPC holding 74% equity and the Government of Arunachal Pradesh owning 26%.

The estimated cost of the project is ₹26,070 crore, funded through a 70:30 debt-equity ratio, including central assistance for infrastructure development and flood moderation. Besides generating clean electricity, the project is expected to create employment and aid flood control.
