The Latvian government has taken a significant step towards enhancing its military capabilities by approving the procurement of 18 Archer wheeled self-propelled artillery systems from Sweden. This decision marks a pivotal move to strengthen Latvia’s indirect fire capabilities, a necessary adjustment in response to ongoing regional security concerns.

This initiative follows the signing of a letter of intent in June, which underscored the commitment to involve Latvia’s defense industry in the associated supply chain for this acquisition. The involvement of local industries aims to bolster domestic defense capabilities and create jobs while fostering collaboration with Sweden.

Latvian Defense Minister Andris Spruds announced this strategic procurement, noting the establishment of a joint Archer 6×6 unit with Sweden. This unit is expected to facilitate training and preliminary capability development prior to the arrival of the new systems, enhancing operational readiness.

As part of the broader investment in defense, around 159 million euros (approximately $185 million) has been allocated in Latvia’s 2026 defense budget specifically for indirect fire support capabilities, which will encompass mortars, missiles, and howitzers. Full details of this deal are yet to be revealed; however, in the interim, Sweden is anticipated to lease BAE Systems’ platforms to Latvia until the new systems are fully operational.

The Archer system itself is a 155mm artillery piece that is already in service with several countries, including Sweden, the UK, and Ukraine. Renowned for its high mobility, firepower, and survivability, the system features an armored cabin designed to protect the crew. Its quick disengagement capabilities allow it to vacate a firing position within 30 seconds after firing, significantly minimizing vulnerability to counter-battery fire.

Notably, the Archer can fire six rounds before repositioning by up to 500 meters (approximately 1,640 feet) in less than two minutes, which is crucial in modern combat scenarios where quick movement can dictate survival. Furthermore, the system is compatible with standard 155mm munitions and advanced options, including BONUS top-attack anti-armor rounds and Excalibur precision-guided projectiles.

In a related development, the British Army recently selected the Archer as an interim replacement for the AS90 self-propelled howitzer, further emphasizing the system’s growing role in NATO operations. As Latvia works to upgrade its military assets and capabilities, this acquisition will likely strengthen its defense posture within the alliance.
