US Approves $800 Million Package for Kuwait’s Patriot Missile Program

The United States has granted approval for an $800-million defense package aimed at enhancing Kuwait’s Patriot missile program, a move that underscores the ongoing military collaboration between the two nations. The Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA) has certified the potential foreign military sale to Congress, indicating a broad spectrum of support that includes spare and repair parts, missile stockpile management, operator and maintenance training, as well as technical assistance from both the U.S. government and private contractors.

This comprehensive package also encompasses shared and country-specific assistance for Patriot PAC-3 Missile Support Centers, strategically designed to bolster Kuwait’s operational readiness and modernization efforts. The aim is to ensure that Kuwait is well-equipped to address both current and future threats effectively.

The DSCA highlighted that the proposed sale aligns with U.S. foreign policy goals and national security objectives, specifically benefiting a key non-NATO ally. By reinforcing Kuwait’s defensive capabilities, the U.S. aims to strengthen regional stability and promote economic progress in the Middle East.

Among the principal contractors involved in this initiative are RTX Corporation, Lockheed Martin, LEIDOS, and KBR, all of which will send representatives to assist with technical support and familiarization regarding the systems.

This latest support package follows a string of collaborations between the U.S. and Kuwait aimed at enhancing the latter’s military capabilities. In April 2025, the U.S. authorized a $400-million investment to upgrade and recertify Kuwait’s existing Patriot missiles, focusing on improving their accuracy and reliability against aerial threats. Additionally, in June of the same year, the U.S. State Department greenlighted a $325-million foreign military sale to bolster Kuwait’s fleet of M1A2 Abrams main battle tanks, which included support for both the legacy M1A2 and the advanced M1A2K variants.

Earlier developments included a significant approval in October 2022 for Kuwait’s acquisition of NASAMS medium-range air defense systems. This deal, which involved advanced missile and radar technologies valued in the billions, marked one of the largest defense procurements from the U.S. at that time.

The ongoing defense relationship continues to evolve, reflecting both nations’ commitment to enhancing security in a volatile region.
