Ukrainian negotiators have arrived in the United States for critical discussions with the Trump administration aimed at bringing an end to nearly four years of conflict with Russia. A member of the delegation confirmed the visit, which includes discussions with President Donald Trump’s envoy Steve Witkoff and his son-in-law Jared Kushner.
The timing of these talks is significant, approaching the fourth anniversary of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine. Amid rising tensions and ongoing conflict, Kyiv is seeking clarity on security guarantees from its allies, essential for the embattled nation’s defense and future stability.
Kyrylo Budanov, a top aide to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, shared on social media his arrival in the U.S., highlighting the importance of the discussions ahead. He is accompanied by security chief Rustem Umerov and negotiator David Arakhamia. Budanov emphasized the need for a comprehensive dialogue concerning the details of a potential peace agreement, signaling the urgency and stakes of the negotiations.
Planned discussions will include a joint meeting with Witkoff, Kushner, and U.S. Army Secretary Daniel Driscoll. President Trump has publicly advocated for an end to what has been described as Europe’s most severe conflict since World War II, expressing his frustration with both Ukraine and Russia over the drawn-out nature of the war.
Despite Trump’s efforts, Kyiv is wary of compromises that could be perceived as capitulation. The Ukrainian ambassador to the U.S. indicated the focus of the upcoming talks will likely center around security guarantees and the reconstruction of Ukraine in the post-war landscape.
