Ukraine’s Armed Forces have recently established a dedicated command aimed at bolstering operations involving unmanned aerial systems (UAS) to counter Russian kamikaze drones. This decision comes on the heels of successful interceptions by Kyiv’s drone fleets against loitering munitions, specifically targeting the Shahed and Geran drone platforms that Russia has utilized throughout its ongoing four-year invasion.
To support this new command unit, Ukraine is intensifying its efforts in warfighter enlistment while also focusing on crew training and recruiting personnel for specialized drone interceptor divisions. The initiative reflects a strategic pivot toward enhancing counter-drone security at critical government infrastructures located along the frontlines, ensuring these sites are equipped to respond rapidly to emerging threats.
Commander-in-Chief of Ukraine’s Armed Forces, Gen. Oleksandr Syrskyi, underscored the caliber of personnel involved in this initiative, stating that the command staff comprises highly experienced officers with combat backgrounds. He noted that these officers have contributed practical proposals for advancing what he termed “small air defense” systems, leading to decisive management actions.
During the announcement of the new command, Syrskyi provided insights into the evolving tactics employed by Russian forces. He warned that Moscow continues to innovate on the battlefield, utilizing tools such as American-made Starlink satellite terminals to enhance the operational reach of their strike drones, and they are adeptly leveraging unfavorable weather conditions to their advantage.
In addition, Syrskyi highlighted key production advances designed to replenish Ukraine’s UAS inventory. He emphasized that the ongoing output from Ukrainian and European manufacturers, coupled with sustained support from Western allies in the form of radar and drone supplies, is vital for maintaining effective air defense capabilities.
The Commander-in-Chief also reported that Ukrainian military aviation has been performing admirably, achieving significant milestones in the destruction of airborne threats. To date, Ukrainian helicopters have reportedly neutralized over 5,000 enemy attack drones, underscoring the critical role of aerial combat in the ongoing conflict.
