US Coast Guard Receives 18th HC-130J Aircraft Ahead of Schedule

The US Coast Guard (USCG) has marked a significant milestone with the acquisition of its 18th HC-130J aircraft, designated CGNR 2018. The aircraft has been missionized at L3Harris Integrated Mission Systems in Waco, Texas, integrating advanced systems to enhance its operational capabilities.

The HC-130J is a long-range surveillance aircraft, upgraded from the standard C-130J model. It features the Minotaur Mission Systems Suite (MSS+) along with USCG-specific multi-mode radar, sensors, and communication systems designed to meet the service’s unique needs. This advanced integration equips the aircraft to perform critical missions in border security, commerce support, and emergency response.

The CGNR 2018 is set to be stationed at the USCG Air Station in Sacramento, California, where it will assist in the air station’s transition from the older C-27J aircraft to the more advanced HC-130Js. This particular aircraft is the fourth in the series to be delivered mission-ready, and its timely arrival, two months ahead of schedule, comes after the service received its 17th aircraft back in January 2025.

Currently, the HC-130J models are deployed at various USCG air stations, including those in Elizabeth City, North Carolina; Kodiak, Alaska; and Barbers Point, Hawaii. The USCG has plans to expand its fleet to a total of 25 HC-130J aircraft, underscoring the importance of this model in securing US borders and maritime zones.

The aircraft boasts impressive performance metrics, cruising at speeds of 320 knots (593 kilometers or 368 miles per hour) and covering a distance of 4,900 nautical miles (9,075 kilometers or 5,639 miles). Additionally, it has the capability to remain airborne for over 20 hours, making it a formidable asset for extended missions.

A key component of the HC-130J’s advanced technology is the L3Harris-developed MSS+, which features an open architecture. This innovative system allows for real-time collection, processing, and sharing of surveillance data in-flight, facilitating better communication and coordination with other operational units, and significantly improving information sharing compared to previous platform-specific arrangements. This advancement enhances the operational effectiveness of the Coast Guard, contributing to the agency’s mission of ensuring safety and security within US maritime environments.
