Air Commodore B S Vijay Rao, VSM, has officially taken the reins as the Air Officer Commanding of Base Repair Depot (BRD) in Palam, New Delhi, as of March 1, 2026. This transition in leadership is significant for one of the Indian Air Force’s key establishments devoted to maintenance and overhaul operations.
With a career spanning over three decades, Air Commodore Vijay Rao was commissioned into the Aeronautical Engineering (Electronics) Branch of the Indian Air Force on November 27, 1995. He holds a degree in Electrical Engineering and an Executive MBA, complemented by prestigious military education from the National Defence College and the Army War College. This combination of technical and strategic training underscores his capability to lead and innovate within the Air Force.
Throughout his career, Air Commodore Rao has held numerous critical positions, gaining extensive experience in field operations, staff duties, and project management. His tenure includes a pivotal role as Chief Engineering Officer at a leading base, as well as significant responsibilities at Air Headquarters, where he was involved in Operations, Maintenance, and Plans branches. His contributions were key to the Indian Air Force’s modernization efforts, especially in programs concerning acquisition and sustainment.
In addition to his domestic achievements, Air Commodore Rao has represented the Indian Air Force in various professional engagements abroad. His involvement in major upgrade initiatives and technology transfer programs with global aerospace organizations has been instrumental in bolstering indigenous technical capabilities.
For his exceptional service, Air Commodore Rao has been honored with the Presidential Vishisht Seva Medal (VSM). His new assignment at BRD Palam is anticipated to further enhance the depot’s role in maintaining operational readiness and fostering technological advancements within the Indian Air Force.
