Fincantieri Lays Keel for Italian Navy's U212 Near Future Submarine

Fincantieri has officially laid the keel for the U212 Near Future Submarine (NFS) at its facility located in Muggiano, La Spezia, marking a significant development in Italy’s naval capabilities. This milestone is part of a broader initiative initiated in 2018, aimed at replacing the aging Sauro-class diesel-electric submarines that have been in service since the 1980s.

Construction of the first submarine in this new class began in 2022, and it is designated to enter service by 2029 under the hull number “NFS1 S530.” The program is set to culminate in the delivery of a total of four submarines, with an anticipated completion date stretching to 2032.

Fincantieri emphasized that the U212NFS class represents a considerable advancement over its U212A predecessors, showcasing enhanced design maturity and a greater level of domestic technological content. The integration of improved onboard systems is expected to elevate the capabilities of the Italian Navy significantly.

Among the innovations highlighted is the incorporation of lithium-ion propulsion batteries along with a new combat system. These advancements aim to provide the submarine with enhanced stealth, endurance, efficiency, and resilience against cyber threats.

The U212 NFS is being designed as a modern attack submarine capable of engaging a variety of threats. It will be armed with land attack cruise missiles, torpedoes, and unmanned underwater vehicles, reinforcing its primary role in subsurface combat scenarios.

In addition to its combat capabilities, the vessel will boast an array of advanced sensors, an upgraded communication suite, and an electronic warfare system. Enhanced autopilot technology is also being integrated to ensure superior situational awareness and operational effectiveness.

In terms of physical specifications, the submarine will measure 59 meters (194 feet) in length and have a beam of 7 meters (23 feet). It will feature a two-level deck designed to accommodate a crew of more than 30 personnel.

The propulsion system for the U212 NFS will utilize a combination of an MTU 16V-396 diesel generator, a Permasyn motor, and a specially designed low-noise propeller, further contributing to its operational capabilities. This ambitious project represents a critical evolution in the Italian Navy’s maritime strategy as it seeks to enhance its fleet’s effectiveness and modernize its underwater combat capabilities.
