An Indian Army officer, Major Swathi Shantha Kumar, has been awarded the distinguished UN Secretary-General’s Award 2025 for her innovative project, “Equal Partners, Lasting Peace.” This award acknowledges her significant contributions to fostering gender-inclusive peacekeeping during her deployment in South Sudan.

Since August 2024, Major Swathi has served with the United Nations Mission in South Sudan as the Engagement Platoon Commander, leading a pioneering team of 20 women soldiers. This deployment marked a historic milestone, being the first instance of an all-women contingent engaged in the UN mission in that country.

In a recent statement, Major Swathi addressed the critical need for integrating women into operational roles, emphasizing that gender-inclusive patrols were essential for improving interactions with local communities. She noted, “We always conducted gender-inclusive patrols and ensured that women peacekeepers actively participated in all operations and activities.” This approach was instrumental in building trust and enhancing communication with local populations.

Historically, women and children in conflict-affected regions were often hesitant to engage with peacekeeping forces. However, through consistent outreach and community engagement, Major Swathi’s team succeeded in bridging this gap. They organized awareness campaigns aimed at combating conflict-related sexual violence and distributed protection contact cards that offered emergency support and access to UN resources.

The regular interactions and targeted patrolling in sensitive areas significantly boosted community confidence and mobility. This initiative highlighted the equal importance of women and men in peacekeeping efforts, showcasing how inclusive engagement can lead to sustained peace and stability.

Major Swathi’s recognition on a global platform not only reflects her individual commitment but also underscores the Indian Army’s expanding role in UN peacekeeping operations. It stands as a testament to India’s dedication to advancing gender equality within the realm of international security.
